A subsidiary of US developer Magnolia Solar, which was founded two years ago to commercialise nanotechnology-based thin-film solar technology, has received funding for a second phase development contract from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
The funds were approved after the team met the first phase milestones for the development of nanostructure based thin-film solar cells.
The contract is for the continued demonstration of high-efficiency nano-structured thin-film solar cells and represents the second part of a previously announced $1m three phase development programme.
During the first stage of the project, the team demonstrated tunable antireflection coatings for solar cells on glass substrates and developed nanostructured absorber materials to capture a larger part of the solar spectrum.
Magnolia Solar said it will continue optimising this unique solar cell technology during the next part of the project.
It has opened an office at the Albany Nanotech complex on the University of Albany campus in New York to allow collaboration between its team and the development team at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
