The focus of global power project developer Iberdrola Renewables is once again on solar power having secured the long-term sale of photovoltaic energy from its project in the US state of Arizona that is expected to be online next year.

The Oregon-headquartered division of the Spanish utility has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Arizona power utility Salt River Project to sell 20MW of solar energy from its Copper Crossing Solar Ranch in Pinal County, which is the second power purchase agreement it has signed this week.
Iberdrola has also agreed to sell the entire output of a 30MW solar PV project that it is looking to develop in the northern part of Alamosa County in Colorado, to a subsidiary of Xcel Energy.
‘From wind power to solar, our partnership with Iberdrola Renewables has resulted in thousands of Salt River Project customers benefiting from clean, renewable energy,’ said Salt River Project general manager Richard Silverman.
The agreement with Salt River represents the third partnership between the companies.
Iberdrola said that Salt River Project will also lease a portion of the property it owns in the region to be used for the development of the Copper Crossing solar facility.
The two power purchase agreements signal the company’s shift into the solar energy sector. With a track record in wind power, the company said it plans to bring 50MW of solar power to commercial operation by the end of next year.
In 2004, Salt River Project’s board required that 15 per cent of the utility’s energy be generated from sustainable resources by 2025. Renewable power currently represents 6.5 per cent of the company’s portfolio.
