BP Solar has been contracted to build Australia’s largest ever grid-connected solar power installation, a 10MW photovoltaic (PV) array in Geraldton, Western Australia, with the state energy corporation Verve Energy.

The project is valued at over $A50m ($47m) with BP Solar carrying out the engineering and construction activity, and the operation and maintenance of the plant once constructed. Work will begin in early 2011 and should be complete before the end of the year.
One third of the cost will be met by the state government, with additional funding from Australia’s Office of Energy and Royalties for Regions scheme.
‘BP Solar is delighted to be having our skills and experience in building projects of this scale recognised in Australia,’ said Tony Stocken, director of BP Solar Australia.
Western Australia has a target to source 20 per cent of its energy from renewables by 2020.
BP Solar has been manufacturing solar panels since 1973. Its current production facilities are located in India and China.
Verve Energy is owned by the government of Western Australia, where it operates conventional power stations along with wind, solar and biomass facilities.
