Amsterdam - A new study says Europe must triple its energy efficiency measures to reach its goal of slashing its energy needs by 20% over the next decade.

The study by Ecofys in the Netherlands and Fraunhofer ISI in Germany says Europe can save €78bn ($101bn) a year by 2020 if it uses energy more efficiently.
But the 27-nation EU is lagging behind its efficiency goals, defined as the overall consumption of energy.
The EU has adopted a "20-20-20" programme to cut 20% of its greenhouse gases and to get 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
Patty Fong of the European Climate Foundation, which commissioned the report, said on Wednesday that EU countries need a raft of new policies and regulations to meet those goals.
