05.08.2011 First Solar becomes latest PV company to see sharp drop in sales
US photovoltaic (PV) company First Solar announced net sales of $533m in the second quarter of 2011, a decrease of $34.5m from the first quarter and $55m compared with the same period in 2010. The company attributed the decrease in revenue to lower average selling prices and policy uncertainties in Europe.

05.08.2011 EcoEnergy completes 1.6MW rooftop solar development
US renewable company EcoEnergy has completed a 1.6MW rooftop solar installation on a warehouse used by catering supply-chain business WEBstaurant Restaurant Supply. The 7,000 panel development is the first of three that WEBstaurant plans for solar arrays on its facilities in the US and the company estimates this will lead to energy savings of $74,000 a year. The warehouse is located in the Upper Leacock Township around 60 miles west of Philidelphia.

04.08.2011 MEMC to purchase Fotowatio Renewable Ventures in $100m deal
US solar wafer manufacturer MEMC and subsidiary SunEdison have reached a definitive agreement to acquire photovoltaic factory builder Fotowatio Renewable Ventures’ (FRV) US division. It will pay $122m for the acquisition and repayments of $22.9m in intercompany loans and capital contributions. The final purchase price is subject to adjustments based on the actual figure for intercompany loans and capital contributions at closing. The deal also includes deferred payment of up to $103.6m if FRV meets certain performance criteria.

Canadian energy company Capital Power, Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Renewable Holdings Canada have entered into a limited partnership for the development, construction and operation of a 270MW wind farm in Ontario, Canada. The project is expected to cost between C$750m ($770m) and C$900m ($924), the majority of which will be funded through project financing.

01.08.2011 IKEA purchases UK wind farm
Swedish furniture retailer IKEA’s UK division has acquired a 12.3MW wind farm in Aberdeenshire, north Scotland. The farm consists of seven turbines and produces electricity sufficient to cover 30 per cent of the company’s UK consumption. It is the first UK purchase of a wind farm by IKEA and brings the number of turbines owned by the company to 67.

US solar system provider SolarCity has partnered with electric vehicle (EV) charging station manufacturer ClipperCreek to distribute EV charging units as part of the company’s retails package. According to SolarCity the combination of an EV with a residential solar system could save the average driver more than $170 per month, compared to driving a petrol-powered vehicle.

29.07.2011 Gestamp purchases two US wind farms for $130m
Gestamp Wind North America has purchased two wind farms in Maryland, US, for $130m. The facilities at Roth Rock have a combined capacity of 50MW and utilise 20 turbines. The site has been connected to the grid and 80 per cent of electricity generated will be sold to utility Delmarva through a 20-year purchase power agreement. The remainder will be sold to Maryland University and the State General Service Department.

28.07.2011 Westinghouse Solar sees 24 per cent revenue rise, still makes net loss
US photovoltaics company Westinghouse Solar has seen its second quarter revenues increase 24 per cent compared with the same period in 2010, and 38 per cent on the first quarter of 2011. Total revenue for the quarter was $2.7m and the first half of 2011 saw orders worth $4.8m, up 60 per cent from the $4.8m in the first two months of 2010.
